Home invasion, shootout suspects sentenced to 25 years

Two suspects were sentenced to a total of 25 years for house robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 July 2018.

Four accused were arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa following a fierce shootout during a home invasion in Everest Heights, Verulam,KZN in February 2016.

One suspect who was shot in the face by Reaction Officers died in Westville Prison a month ago due to natural causes. The fourth suspect who was arrested a day later by the South African police was aquitted.

In passing sentence magistrate V.P. Noncembu said the swift action of Reaction Unit South Africa had resulted in the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the exhibits.

She sentenced both accused to 10 years each for the robbery and the second suspect for an additional 5 years for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The silver Chevy Cruze that was used in the robbery was hijacked in Newlands West days before.

The accused were denied bail and spent the past two and a half years in custody at Westville Prison whilst awaiting trial.
