Yesterday afternoon Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a call for a drowning in progress at the Umdloti beach in KwaZulu-Natal.
Reports from the scene indicate that two friends from Gauteng went swimming in the sea while the family was sitting on the beach. Both men were caught in the current and swept out to sea.
Two Lifeguards raced out in the treacherous water to rescue the two men. The one Lifeguard got to the one man and secured him with a floatation device but as the other Lifeguard got near the other man he disappeared under the water and was swept away by the strong current.
A search for the missing man was still ongoing by the SAPS Search and Rescue team.
