Five men aged between 20 and 30 are in custody after they were arrested by police officers from Umlazi K9 Unit and EThekwini Inner and Outer South Clusters on 9 January 2020. Police were conducting an intelligence driven operation to apprehend criminals involved in robbery cases of e-hailing drivers.
Three males were arrested at Umlazi after police were following up on the suspects who had hijacked the complainant of his vehicle in Lamontville on 8 January 2020. The vehicle was recovered. Suspects were arrested and were taken to Umlazi police station for detention. They have been linked to a number of armed robbery, attempted murder and house robbery cases reported at Umlazi police station.
Police continued with their operation which led them to the N2 southbound where two suspects were arrested. It is alleged that they requested an e-hailing vehicle and attempted to rob the driver when they were overpowered by other e-hailing drivers.
Suspects were taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. They have been positively linked to a carjacking case that was reported in Wentworth last month.
Police investigation is continuing to link the suspects with similar offences. The arrested suspects will appear in the Umlazi and Wentworth Magistrates Courts soon.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers for arresting the suspects.
