On Monday, 8 August 2017 at about 19:00, a 29 year old man was at Abelia Road, Sydenham seated in his vehicle when he was accosted by three armed suspects.
At gunpoint, the suspects robbed him of his white BMW and drove off. Later that day, KwaDabeka Crime Prevention members spotted the said vehicle near KwaDabeka clinic with three occupants. Members attempted to stop the said vehicle but the suspects opened fire at the policemen whilst fleeing.
The police returned fire, wounding one suspect and the other two suspects managed to flee the scene unharmed. A firearm was recovered at the scene and will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of any other crime in the country.
The injured suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention and will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court soon for possession of suspected stolen property and attempted murder. He will also be taken to Sydenham police station where he will be charged for carjacking.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the KwaDabeka members for swiftly arresting of the suspect. “Our members will continue with their positive approach and make sure that all the criminals are sent to jail. We will not rest until our dedicated and committed police officers arrest the outstanding suspects,” he said.
