A 30-year-old man is appearing at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on 24 august 2020, facing charges for attempted carjacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm.

On 21 August 2020, at 20:10, a motorist was driving on Musa Road in KwaMashu Men’s hostel, when he was accosted by a group of armed men, who held him up at a gunpoint forcing him out of his vehicle. Unbeknown to them, police officers were in the vicinity and immediately responded. Whilst the police officers were approaching, the suspects opened fire at police and there was a shootout.

During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect sustained injuries on his lower body. Police retrieved a 9mm pistol with erased serial numbers a few meters from the injured suspect at the crime scene. Meanwhile, a police officer also sustained a gunshot wound on his left hip and was rushed to hospital. The suspect was also taken to a local clinic where he was treated and released for detention.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the police officers for the quick response and the apprehension of the suspect. “The police officers must be commended for not backing down even when they came under fire. We wish the injured police officer a speedy,” he said.
