Hijacker fatally shot by police in Durban

It is alleged that yesterday, at about 17:40, the Newlands East police assisted by security company reacted on information about a bakkie that was hijacked in KwaDabeka area on the same day.

The members went to Inanda road where they spotted the same suspicious vehicle and gave chase. The suspects allegedly opened fire towards the members and they allegedly returned fire fatally wounding one suspect aged 27.

The suspect’s vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier along Dumisani Makhaye highway. Two other suspects aged 21 and 34 sustained injuries and were arrested. They were taken to hospital where they were treated and discharged.

An unlicensed firearm together with five live rounds of ammunition were found next to the deceased suspect. Charges of carjacking, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearm were opened at Newlands East police station for investigation.

The arrested suspects are expected to make their first court appearance tomorrow in the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court.

“We are warning the criminals that the police will not hesitate to retaliate when they are under attack while executing their official duties. The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they can be linked to other cases reported in Durban and the surrounding areas,” said KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa.
