On 11 June 2017 at approximately 17:15 whilst on a routine patrol on Soofie Shaeb Drive in Durban North, a Marshall Security armed reaction officer noticed a suspicious vehicle, a black Mercedes-Benz and began to follow the vehicle whilst relaying information to our emergency contact centre.

The vehicle was confirmed to have been fitting the registration and description of a vehicle wanted for the commission of several crimes in the greater Durban and surrounding areas of late. The driver of the vehicle noticed the reaction officer was following the vehicle and increased speed in a reckless attempt to evade arrest.

Traveling at high speed the vehicle fled in a southerly direction on Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue, with the Marshall Security armed reaction officer in pursuit, the vehicle turned up Simso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road before taking a turn onto Percy Osborne Road where the vehicle came to a stop.

Two occupants of the Mercedes-Benz alighted from the vehicle brandishing AK47 rifles, firing several shots at the armed reaction officer who took cover returning fire, with several high caliber rounds striking the officers vehicle.

The suspects fled in the vehicle towards Umgeni Road whilst additional resources and members of the South African Police Services descended on the scene.

An extensive search of the area was conducted however the suspects managed to evade arrest.

The Marshall Security armed reaction officer was unharmed in the ordeal.

The scene was secured and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
