On Thursday 11 June 2020, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation conducted a joint operation with Boston SAPS members on R617 and arrested two suspects aged 29 and 39 for possession of abalone.
Members received information about a vehicle that was transporting abalone from Eastern Cape and to Newcastle. The said vehicle was intercepted along R617 and searched. Upon searching, seven plastic bags full of abalone were found.
The two were then place under arrest and charged for possession and transporting abalone. The abalone weighed approximately 144.5 kilograms and the estimated street value is approximately R312 000.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Impendle Magistrate’s Court soon.
