The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit arrested two police officers for alleged corruption in two separate cases last week Wednesday and Thursday 19 April 2018.

Both police officers appeared in the Durban and Newcastle Magistrate’s Courts respectively.

It is alleged during during August 2017, Constable Phumlani Mlotshwa (33), allegedly solicited a R5000 bribe from a complainant in a theft of motor vehicle case in order to release a vehicle that was impounded after it was recovered. The amount was paid to Mlotshwa after he accompanied the victim to the nearby ATM.

Meanwhile, Constable Ntuthuko Mzobe (33), who is stationed at Durban central satellite police station allegedly confiscated a taxi last week after he alleged that the driver almost ran him over. He apparently demanded a R2500 bribe in order to release the said vehicle. The officer was arrested shortly afterwards following an entrapment operation.

Both accused are out on R5000 bail each, the cases have been adjourned to 15 and 21 May respectively.
