A 45 year old suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court for allegedly bribing Customs officials to release his detained containers.

The suspect was arrested following a sting operation involving the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit in Durban and the South African Revenues Service Customs Division yesterday.

Members received information about a man who allegedly offered a bribe to Customs official in order to release his containers after they were quarantined for contravening the Customs Act.

The containers were storing assorted liquor destined for international markets.

The suspect was caught red handed giving the officials a substantial amount of money. He was subsequently arrested and charged for corruption.
