Two men escaped injury after a gunman opened fire on their white Toyota Quantum taxi with a high caliber rifle while they were traveling north on the N2 between Umhlanga and Sibaya Casino on Tuesday morning 16 February 2021.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:07 after receiving a call from a passerby reporting the shooting.

On arrival Reaction Officers located the taxi in the center median. The occupants were not in the vehicle however after a brief search the two were located on the south bound lane.

The driver explained that he and a friend were traveling to Mandini north of Durban when a white Toyota Quantum drove up alongside him. He noticed the sliding door open and a man who was armed with a rifle opened fire on his vehicle. He swerved and drove into the center median after one bullet shattered a rear window on the driver’s side.

The motive for the shooting has not been established at this stage.
