Durban Magistrate’s Court sentenced Doris Odwa Kati (26) to a total of 17 years imprisonment for attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. On 4 September 2016 a 29 year old female was at Glebelands Hostel when the accused shot and injured her. He then robbed her of an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention.
A case of attempted murder and robbery was opened at the Umlazi police station. The docket was assigned to detectives from the Provincial Task Team for investigation. A thorough investigation was conducted which led to the arrest of the accused. He was charged and taken to court. A well prepared docket was sent to court which led to a successful prosecution.
The accused was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and seven years imprisonment for attempted murder.
SAPS management commended the investigation team for their dedication and commitment in the face of scathing criticism. This conviction is an indication that even though the wheels of justice might be slow at some times, those that commit such violent crimes cannot escape the long arm of the law.
