Getaway vehicle links KZN ‘cash in transit’ gang to armed robbery

A bakkie that was used as a getaway vehicle following a cash-in-transit robbery scene in June 2019 has linked five accused who appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court charged for robberies committed in KwaZulu-Natal.

The group, Bheki Godfrey Sifiso Ndlovu (42), Zenzele Gumede (37), Bongani Madlala (47), Mpumelelo Ntshangashe (46), Zwanani Goodman Cele (31), appeared in court on Monday, 10 February 2020 after they were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, TRT and Dog unit on charges of armed robbery which took place in Southport area in 2019.

Towards the end of August 2019, the dockets were transferred to the Hawks for further investigation and during the intensive investigation linkages were made and the accused were arrested on charges of armed robbery.

The accused had been in custody following their arrest for a cash-in-transit case and possession of unlicensed firearms. The victim of a robbed bakkie which was taken in June 2019 identified them upon their recent court appearance.

The case has been remanded to 26 March 2020, in the Pietermaritzburg High Court, for a pre-trial conference where the accused will face all charges of cash-in-transit robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and armed robbery jointly in the next court proceeding.
