The Esikhaleni Regional Court sentenced two accused, Siyabonga Mkhwanazi (18) and Nkanyiso Mayise (19) to a total of 30 years imprisonment for rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

On 8 July 2019, at 18:30, an 18-year-old female was at Mzingwenya Reserve walking to her home when she was accosted by three males armed with a firearm. They threatened her with a firearm, robbed her of her belongings and took her into the bushes where they took turns raping her at gunpoint.

A case of rape and robbery was opened at Esikhaleni police station and the investigating officer from Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who took over the investigation ensured that the perpetrators face the full might of law.

Two males were arrested a month a later and were kept in custody throughout the trial.

On 24 February 2020, they were each sentenced to 20 year imprisonment for rape and 10 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
