Wasbank Police near Dundee, under the Umzinyathi Cluster, swiftly reacted to an armed robbery at a local garage in the area and within an hour four suspects were arrested.

They were found in possession of suspected stolen cash as well as a 9mm pistol with ammunition and a toy gun. All four suspects, aged 25 and 30 years, will appear in the Glencoe Magistrate’s Court on Monday 17 July 2017 facing charges of armed robbery, theft and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

On the night of 13 July 2017, at 23:50, a petrol attendant was busy working at local petrol service station when a VW Polo came to fill up petrol. There were four occupants in the vehicle. The victim filled up the petrol as requested by the driver. When the driver was supposed to pay, he pulled out his pistol and allegedly threatened him demanding cash from the safe.

The suspect was joined by other suspects who were in the vehicle. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and tied the victim and his colleague with cable ties. The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle without paying for petrol.

Local police were alerted and the Wasbank Police members who were conducting their night patrols chased the said vehicle. Few minutes later the vehicle was stopped and all suspects were arrested. They were found in possession of a 9mm pistol, a toy gun and cash suspected to be taken from the garage.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members for their quick reaction that led to the arrest of the suspects. “The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.

The arrested suspects who are from Msinga area will be profiled and check if they are not part of the gang that is allegedly involved in business robberies,” he said.
