A routine police operation escalated into a significant case of stock theft and corruption, leading to the arrest of four individuals in Bulwer this week.

The incident began when local police, conducting a vehicle checkpoint operation, stopped a vehicle loaded with 51 goats. The two occupants, aged 36 and 40, were unable to produce any proper documentation for the transportation of the livestock.

Initial police investigations revealed that the suspects, who are from Sandlwana in Bergville, were en route to sell the goats in the Bulwer, Donnybrook, and Elandskop areas. As a result, both men were immediately arrested and charged with possession of property suspected to be stolen.

The case took a more serious turn on the morning of Friday, 29 August 2025. Two additional individuals, aged 38 and 47, arrived at the Bulwer Police Station. They allegedly offered a R5,000 bribe to the Station Commander in an attempt to secure the release of both the impounded 51 goats and the vehicle used in the crime.

The Station Commander refused the illicit offer and instead placed the two new suspects under arrest. They now face charges of bribery and corruption.

All four arrested suspects are scheduled to appear before the Bulwer Magistrates Court on Monday, 01 September 2025, to answer to the respective charges.
