On Wednesday 13 March 2024, Nokulunga Gumede (59) briefly appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for obstructing the course of justice and unauthorised removing of an inmate from correctional service centre.

Gumede was employed by the South African Police Service as a Branch Commander holding a rank of Captain at KwaMakhutha police station. It is alleged that on 17 April 2020, the former Captain went to Westville prison and booked out her biological son without being in possession of proper documents from court. This was allegedly done without the knowledge of the investigating officer. Her son was detained for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Gumede took him to court and the matter was not placed on roll due to Covid19 restrictions. She then took him home and a case of obstructing the course of justice and unauthorised removing of inmate from correctional service centre was reported. The case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation and a summons was issued.

On 05 February 2024, she was summoned to appear in court yesterday and was released on warning. The case was postponed to 27 March 2024.

Whilst in a separate incident, a police Constable briefly appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday following his arrest by the Hawks members on Sunday, 09 March 2024. He was arrested for dealing in drugs and unlawful possession of ammunition. Constable Sherwin Chetty (28) was arrested at a road block after information was received that he was transporting drugs.

He was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 20 March 2024 for formal bail application.
