Five suspects linked to multiple murders, including the killings of a couple and two police officers, were fatally wounded in a shootout with KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police on Tuesday evening in Mpumalanga Township near Hammersdale.
According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiundu, officers were tracking the suspects in connection with at least two murders—a woman shot dead in February in the Malanga precinct and her husband, who was killed last Saturday after a previous failed attempt on his life in January.
Police received a tip-off about the suspects’ whereabouts and located them along the Mella main road. When officers signaled for them to stop, the suspects allegedly opened fire, prompting a shootout.
“The police were left with no choice but to retaliate,” Netshiundu said. “Five suspects were shot and fatally wounded.”
Authorities recovered three firearms and ammunition from the suspects’ vehicle. No police officers were injured in the exchange.
Netshiundu stated that while the motive behind the couple’s murders remains under investigation, the suspects were also linked to the killings of two police officers in the area. He warned that those who resist arrest endanger their lives.
“When suspects shoot at police, officers have the right to protect themselves and the public,” he said. “Police aim to arrest, but if met with violence, they will respond accordingly.”
The crime scene remains under investigation as authorities work to identify the deceased suspects and determine if more individuals are involved. Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
This incident marks a significant breakthrough in a months-long manhunt, though authorities stress that further inquiries are ongoing.
