Five suspects aged between 18 and 39 years, appeared at Nsuze Magistrate’s Court facing charges of murder and attempted murder. This is as a result of an incident which occurred on 11 November 2018, at Mkhomazi area in Bhamshela, under the Nsuze police precinct.

The two victims, Siyabonga Mthembu (28) and another 23 year old man were on their way home when they were ambushed by a group of men who assaulted them with bush knives and wooden sticks. The victims attempted to run away however they were caught at the nearby homestead and the ordeal continued.

Siyabonga Mthembu succumbed to his injuries at the scene and the 23 year old victim was rushed to hospital. A case of murder and attempted murder was opened by Nsuze police for investigation. Detectives worked around the clock to trace the suspects.

On Tuesday, 20 November 2018, three suspects, Phumlani James Makhanya (28), Siboniso Hlongwa (22), and Sifundo Ndlela (18) were arrested. In the early hours of the morning of 22 November 2018, a further two suspects namely, Sphamandla “Ziqabulele” Nzama (39) and Phila Mzobe (18) were arrested.

All five accused were remanded into custody until 29 November 2018. It is alleged that the deceased were falsely accused of theft although no criminal case was reported to the police in the area.
