A joint operation by Richmond police, a security company, and local traffic officers led to the speedy arrest of five suspects for allegedly killing a businessman and wounding his son during a robbery in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

The officers also recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The recovered firearms were suspected to be the same firearms used during the robbery, police spokesman Lt-Col Thulani Zwane said.

The five suspects, aged between 25 and 30, would appear in the Richmond Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder, attempted murder, business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The robbery occurred shortly before noon on Friday when shop owner Yusuf Mohamed, 56, and his 25-year-old son were approached by a group of armed men in the shop. The men fired shots, fatally wounding Yusuf Mohamed and wounding his son in the arm, Zwane said.

The men fled the scene on foot after taking an undisclosed amount of cash from the shop. Police and the other law enforcement officers were alerted and pursued the suspects. It was alleged that the suspects fired shots at the officers, who retaliated, wounding three suspects.

“Five suspects were arrested and found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Other suspects managed to escape and they are still at large. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to check if they were used in any other crime,” Zwane said.
