Two men appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of cash-in-transit robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said on Wednesday.
A further three suspects appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for cash-in-transit robbery allegedly committed in Richards Bay.
In the Durban case, the Hawks said that on September 25, Siboniso Khumalo, 27, and Sipho Ngubo, 34, allegedly jumped onto a G4S security company vehicle which was standing at the traffic lights in Montclair. The two suspects then pointed a firearm at a security guard.
“The suspects loaded an undisclosed amount of cash in their bags while the driver was driving towards Cato Manor. The driver stopped the vehicle and the suspects jumped off and fled the scene. Hawks members were alerted and a case of cash-in-transit robbery was opened at Montclair Police Station,” the Hawks said.
On investigation, the two were arrested and the amount of R376,220 and one 9mm pistol were recovered from the accused. They were remanded in custody and the case was postponed to October 14 for bail application.
In the second incident, the Hawks said that another three suspects, aged between 28 and 42, appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court.
“On July 2, a security guard’s vehicle was shot at by the suspects on the R66 Road near Ulundi, northern KwaZulu-Natal. The driver stopped the vehicle and they were ordered to jump out of the vehicle. The suspects blew (open) the safe and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash,” the Hawks said.
