Four unlicensed firearms were recovered at Maphumulo area under Ilembe District Municipality on the night of 6 July 2017.

A joint operation by various units under Ilembe Cluster yielded positive results. They were raiding illegal firearms in the area after they received positive information about firearms at a certain homestead. The members identified the said homestead and it was raided.

Four unlicensed firearms such as two homemade shotguns, 9mm pistol and a shotgun were recovered with various live rounds of ammunition. An elderly man (65) was arrested after failing to give satisfactory explanation about the firearms. He was charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The arrested suspect will appear in the Maphumulo Magistrates’ Court on 10 July 2017.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members who worked in a dangerous and mountainous areas with the aim of reaching their target and recover illegal firearms.

“These firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any taxi related cases or faction fights in the area. Our police officers will continue with their good work in recovering illegal firearms and making sure that those in possession of these firearms are caught,” he said.
