Fearless and bold mall gang strikes again

A gang of armed robbers smashed their way into a shop in Southway Mall in Seaview and fled with goods valued at tens of thousands of rands on Thursday night.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said it was unclear whether the mall gang was the same “hammer gang” that used hammers to break into a store in The Atrium in Overport on Wednesday night, although they appeared to have used a similar modus operandi. The incident occurred at around 10.20pm.

“A gang of 15 armed robbers held up two security guards on site at gunpoint and robbed them of their radios and cellphones. The gang then smashed the front glass door of a shop in the centre, ransacked the premises and fled with goods valued at around R50 000,” Mathios said.

Mathios said the gang fled in a white Toyota Quantum with the registration GLARE 7-ZN. Police are investigating.

A mall gang has been terrorising local shopping centres recently, including multiple incidents at Musgrave Centre in recent weeks.
