Four men accused of killing a police officer, Warrant Officer John Ngwane in June 2015 were sentenced on 29 January 2019, by the Esikhaleni Regional Court. The police officer was visiting the detainees in the police cells when he was attacked by four of them.

He was overpowered by detainees who wanted to escape and fatally strangled him. His colleague managed to get assistance from other police officers and the detainees were taken back into custody.

A case of murder was opened at the Esikhaleni police station and the accused were immediately charged for murder. They were taken to court where they were tried. Siyabonga Maseko (24), Sibusiso Qwabe (29) and Busani Masinga (24) were each sentenced to 18 years imprisonment whereas Minenhle Shobede (19) was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.
