Fake Tracker plates used for criminal activities

Reaction Unit South Africa

The public is warned to be on the lookout for vehicles that are illegally using tracker plates that are fitted on the hood of several vehicles not contracted to Tracker.

The Vehicle Tracking Unit (VTU) fitted in nine (9) private companies (Reaction Unit South Africa + 8 others) in KwaZulu-Natal cost approx R105 000 per unit and consist of the tracker plate with four antennas, a processing unit and a display unit. The equipment is used for tracking hijacked, stolen and sought after vehicles in South Africa.

Several vehicles in the Durban and surrounding areas have been illegally fitted with these plates that are home made or stolen from damaged law enforcement vehicles and used for criminal activities. These plates are not connected to processors or display screen and are used to mislead law enforcement and the public. Information received is that certain individuals posing as trackers are unlawfully stopping vehicles, visiting chop shops and collecting bribes from car theft and hijacking suspects.

The public is warned to be cautious.
