A hijacker shot a motorist during a Westmead hijacking last night.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the motorist had stopped to make a purchase in Goodwood Road at around 11.30pm last night when the hijackers accosted him. “Two suspects approached the motorist on foot while he was on his cellphone and busy making a purchase. The suspects started to fight with each other and then fought with the victim and demanded his cellphone,” Mathios said.

“The victim refused to hand over his cellphone but when he realised that the suspects intended to fight fight him for it, he handed it over to them. The suspects then demanded his vehicle keys and the victim told them that his keys were inside the vehicle,” Mathios said. “The suspects jumped into the vehicle and fired a shot which hit the victim in his leg, as they fled the scene. ER24 paramedics attended the scene of the crime and transported the victim to hospital,” Mathios said.

Pinetown SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios advised motorists to be vigilant, especially at this time of the year as the festive season approaches. “Unfortunately, criminals can strike at any time of the day or night, so it is important to always be security conscious and aware of your surroundings. Don’t walk and talk on your cellphone in public places and make sure that your valuables are out of sight when you are driving,” Mathios said.

“One of the greatest advantages criminals have against their victims is the element of surprise, which is why it is important to always remain security conscious and to move quickly away from anyone whose behaviour gives you reason to be suspicious. If you have a ‘gut feeling’ about someone or a particular situation, rather err on the side of caution and leave immediately.”
