In the past week, nearly 1,600 cubic meters (1.6 million liters) of oil and acid have been dumped in the Mduduzi River. Willowton Oil is responsible for the disaster that is considered to be one of the greatest in the history of KZN.

Cato Ridge and the Umgeni River are already polluted and the pollution has reached the Inanda Dam that is fed by the river.

Experts believe that it will take years for the ecology to be restored and believe the approach taken by the government is very slim to the possibility of recovery.

Thousands of fish have died and the nearby vegetation is waning from the suffocating oil in the dam.
