An elderly couple were attacked after they refused to sell two loose cigarettes on account to a customer at their tuck shop on Hilltop Drive in Inanda, KZN.

At approximately 06:50 this morning, 18 August 2018, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the residence after receiving a call from a member of public requesting assistance for the injured couple.

Upon arrival the 73 year old female victim was found bleeding from a wound to her head while her husband suffered blunt force trauma to his arms. The female informed Reaction Officers that the suspect had approached her residence where she runs a tuck shop and asked to purchase two loose cigarettes on account.

When she declined his request he threatened her before he picked up a wooden plank and assaulted her with it. Her husband who was at the back of the property heard her screaming for help and went to her assistance when the suspect attacked him.

The suspect who was known to the couple then fled the scene on foot. The victims provided Officers with a clothing description of the man who attacked them and the direction in which he had fled. RUSA Members proceeded to an informal settlement in the area where they tracked down a man matching the description.

The 33 year old man was placed under arrest after both victims positively identified him as the person who had attacked them. The suspect is currently detained at the Verulam SAPS.

The couple were transported privately to a medical facility.
