A 41 year old supermarket owner was at his business premises at Brookdale in Phoenix when he was confronted by eight armed robbers. At gunpoint, the suspects robbed him of cash and cigarettes before fleeing the scene on foot.

Police officers from Phoenix responded to a report of the robbery and proceeded to the supermarket. Whilst the suspects were fleeing, they spotted the police vehicle and opened fire on police. During the shootout, five suspects were arrested whilst others managed to escape by fleeing on foot.

Two firearms, cash and cigarette were seized by police.

A police vehicle was damaged due to the gunshots, however no police officer was injured. The arrested suspects, who are aged between 30 and 46, were charged with attempted murder as well as robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.

They will appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court soon.
