About 100 students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) staged a protest outside the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The group, some of whom were wearing t-shirts of the African National Congress and the Economic Freedom Fighters, sang and danced outside the court building under the watchful eye of the police.

Two students, who appeared separately, face charges of ‎participating in an illegal gathering‎, hindering the flow of traffic and public violence.

One of the students, Bongkingkosi Khanyile, was arrested on Tuesday after he was spotted using a slingshot during protests at the university’s ML Sultan Campus.

A female student, Lilitha Zikona Dyala, was arrested following protests on Wednesday.

Magistrate Jackie Jonck postponed the case against the two students to October 6, for formal bail hearings and to allow police to determine whether Khanyile was in fact a student of the institution.

After the cases were postponed students returned to the university’s Steve Biko campus and milled around.

University spokesman Alan Khan said that the university would be closed for the rest of the week in the wake of the protests for free higher education.
