The management of Durban’s University of Technology has warned that the 2018 academic year may be something of the past if the salary issue of staff is not resolved soon.

Staff demands a 10% increase, R400 housing allowance and a R9 000 one off bonus. This will cost the university R62 million.

The workers have been offered a 6.5% increase, but this has been rejected.

Statistics SA announced the week that the inflation rate is 4.2%, which means that the university’s offer is even above inflation and workers therefore are demanding double the inflation figures.
