A Durban primary school principal was shot dead as he drove home, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the shooting, ‎that claimed the life of Nhlanhla Mhlongo on Wednesday afternoon.

The 62-year-old principal of Empumelelweni Primary School in the Engonyami area of Umlazi was shot after being accosted by two men.

Zwane said the motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

‎Zwane said a case of murder had been opened at the Bhekithemba police station.

KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana said in a statement released on Thursday that he was devastated at the killing.

‎”We have lost a valuable teacher who was an asset to our schooling system,” he said.
