A KwaZulu-Natal woman will appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday for child neglect.

The 22-year-old mother allegedly left her newly born baby girl with a street vendor and never returned.

Police Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the young mother was arrested on Thursday by Durban Central police at Warwick Avenue.

“On 15 November at about 15:20, it is alleged that the suspect left her three-day-old baby with a street vendor at Warwick Avenue and said she will be back shortly,” Mbhele said.

“The woman never returned and the street vendor took the baby to the police. The baby was then taken to a place of safety where she is currently being taken care of.”

Mbhele said a case of child neglect was opened at Durban Central police station.
