A shootout between suspected carjackers and police has resulted in the arrest of a 31 year old suspect. This was after police together with other law enforcement agencies acted on information of a vehicle taken during a carjacking at Durban Central on the night of 11 June 2019.

The police officers spotted the vehicle travelling along Imbovu Road in Welbedacht East which was being followed by another vehicle. The suspects detected the police approaching and a shootout ensued. One of the suspects sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to hospital where he is under police guard.

The other suspects fled into the dense bush and are still being sought by police.

The vehicle which was taken during the carjacking at Durban Central was recovered. Police seized the second vehicle believed to be used in the commission of the crime. Two police vehicles were damaged during the shootout. The arrested suspect is due to appear in court soon on charges of carjacking, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
