Four year old Melokhule Mkhize burnt to death on Saturday night, 3 November 2018, after her home was set alight in Jacaranda Avenue in Mountview by her grandmother’s boyfriend during an argument.

Reaction Unit South Africa responded to the scene at approx 22:24 after receiving multiple calls from residents in the area reporting the entrapment of three children.

Reaction Officers located the body of Melokhuke lying face down and burnt beyond recognition. Two other children ages seven and eleven were located outside the residence. Paramedics treated them for burns on the body and face and transported them to hospital.

The grandmothers explanation has not been verified. Reaction Officers found that she was heavily intoxicated and blamed her boyfriend for the death of the child. He fled the scene and could not be immediately located.

The four year old child lived with her grandmother while her 17 year old mother, a grade 11 pupil is currently attending school in Amanzimtoti, KZN.
