KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that Martin Kassier was driving under the influence of alcohol when he allegedly struck and killed three young women in February. Blood tests revealed Kassier’s alcohol levels exceeded the legal limit at the time of the fatal collision.
Shockingly, further investigations uncovered that Kassier was also involved in a separate crash in August 2024, when his vehicle collided with a Quantum minibus, resulting in two fatalities.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda provided updates on the case, stating that while Kassier currently faces charges of culpable homicide and drunk driving, the investigation remains ongoing. “This is a prosecution-guided investigation, and we will follow the necessary legal steps as advised,” Netshiunda said.
Kassier was granted R10,000 bail during his initial court appearance and is scheduled to return to court on 26 June. Netshiunda indicated that if evidence leads to upgraded charges—such as murder—his bail conditions could be reassessed.
Authorities are continuing to gather evidence, with hopes of setting a trial date in the upcoming court session. The case has drawn public outcry, with calls for stricter consequences for repeat offenders involved in drunk driving incidents.
As the legal process unfolds, the families of the victims await justice for the tragic losses suffered in both collisions.
