The operations to root-out illegal drug trade are still continuing in the province. This was followed by an operation by the Provincial Drug and Firearm unit that was carried out on 29 May 2020.

The team acted on an Intelligence driven information about the illegal drug trade in one of the houses at Gaza Road in Mpumalanga. The Mpumalanga area has been engulfed with killings with some due to illegal firearms. The police officers pounced at the suspect’s house where they recovered drugs such as mandrax tablets, plastic wrappings of heroin and 12 grams of pure heroin.

Upon searching further inside the house, a. 38 special revolver was also seized with 48 rounds of ammunition. A 38-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for possession of drugs, illegal possession of a firearm as well as possession of ammunition.

Further police investigation revealed that the firearm was stolen during December 2019 in Mpumalanga. The total value of the drugs and the firearm is estimated at R20 000-00. The suspect is due to appear in the Mpumalanga Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 1 June 2020.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula hailed the team in their quest to root-out the illegal drug trade.
