A massive fire tore through the Dakota Informal Settlement in Isipingo in the early hours of this morning, leaving a trail of destruction and scores of residents homeless.
Homes Reduced to Ashes
According to initial reports, at least 100 homes—with estimates rising to 150—were completely gutted in the blaze. The eThekwini Fire Department responded swiftly, managing to extinguish the flames, but not before extensive damage was done. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities have yet to determine how it started.
Community in Crisis
Residents were seen sifting through the charred remains of their homes, desperately trying to salvage whatever belongings they could. Many lost crucial documents, including IDs and birth certificates, along with clothing, furniture, and other essentials.
“No one was injured or killed, but this is a devastating loss for our people,” said Mr. Mukesh Briglal, chairperson of Operation Sukuma Sakhe in Ward 90. “These are hardworking individuals who have lost everything in a matter of hours.”
Emergency Relief Efforts Underway
Disaster relief organization Gift of the Givers has stepped in to provide emergency aid, while local community leaders have set up a collection point at the Isipingo Metro Police Station. They are appealing for donations of food, clothing, groceries, and building materials to assist displaced families.
Briglal confirmed that disaster management teams were expected to arrive soon to provide temporary shelter, likely setting up tents at Dakota Beach—a measure taken in previous fire incidents.
