The railway agency Prasa stopped all rail operations in KZN after vandalism and more than R8 million damage was caused to the Umlazi station by more than 1 000 rioters, while four vehicles were burned in Durban.

According to a local government spokesmen there is an element of crime, vandalism, theft, train hijacking and assault of staff in Natal.

Before the safety of staff and passengers can be guaranteed, there will be no rail operations in Natal.
