A member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) came under heavy fire during an armed robbery in progress at Debonairs on Wick Street in Verulam on Sunday 26 July 2020.

The Reaction Officer was on patrol in the Verulam CBD at approximately 20:42 when he was alerted to suspicious activity at the pizza parlor. The Officer requested backup and approached the business. He parked his Response Vehicle several meters away from the store when he noticed a man standing at the entrance.

As the Officer alighted from his vehicle three other individuals exited the business.

All four suspects began firing in the direction of the Reaction Officer while they fled on Wick Street. They used pedestrians for cover making it difficult for the Reaction Officer to return fire. The suspects are believed to have fled in an awaiting red Toyota Etios. An extensive search was conducted for the gunmen however no arrests were made.

According to employees of Debonairs, the suspects entered the store and were in the process of robbing the business when they were disturbed. The fled with cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash. Several spent 9mm cartridges were recovered.

The Reaction Officer was not injured during the shooting.
