A devastating overnight shack fire at the Effingham informal settlement in Durban North has left one man dead and more than 20 families homeless, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The blaze broke out around 11 p.m. on Monday night and was only extinguished in the early hours of the morning. The victim, believed to be from Port Saint Johns in the Eastern Cape, was burned beyond recognition.
Community in Shock
Distraught residents stood amid the charred remains of their homes as emergency teams assessed the damage. At least 22 informal structures were destroyed, leaving between 20 and 25 individuals displaced.
“People are still trying to come to terms with what happened. Belongings have been reduced to ashes, and families have nowhere to sleep tonight.” the reporter on scene said.
Authorities Respond
Disaster management teams and the Department of Human Settlements were on-site, conducting assessments and providing aid. A spokesperson confirmed that forensic teams were en route to retrieve human remains still visible at the scene.
“The psychological impact, especially on children, is severe,” he said. “We are mobilizing social workers and psychologists to assist affected families.”
Ongoing Crisis in Informal Settlements
The tragedy has reignited concerns over the hazardous living conditions in South Africa’s informal settlements. He noted that rapid urbanization and land scarcity have forced many into unsafe housing with limited access to emergency services.
“This is not an isolated incident,” he said, referencing similar fires in Kenville last year. “We need long-term solutions to prevent these recurring disasters.”
Efforts are underway to coordinate relief with provincial and national officials, including Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba.
As investigations into the fire’s cause continue, displaced residents face an uncertain future, with only ashes remaining of their homes.
