Court sentences man to 60 years for three counts of rape

A KwaZulu-Natal court has sentenced a man convicted on three counts of rape to 60 years imprisonment.

On Thursday the Mthunzini High Court convicted and sentenced 23-year-old Sibusiso Zakhele Ntuli to a total of 60 years imprisonment.

“He was convicted after the court heard how he repeatedly raped a 18-year-old victim at Gingindlovu area in 2013,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela.

Magudulela said the rape occurred in November 2013. “On November 29, 2013, at about 2am in the morning, the victim was at Dokodweni area assisting with wedding preparations when she was approached by the accused. The accused dragged her by force at knifepoint into the nearby bushes where she was repeatedly raped. He then fled the scene after the incident.”

A case of rape was opened and Magudulela said it was through the Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit’s investigations that Ntuli was arrested.

“The accused was arrested in the same area after he was evading the police for a year after the incident”.

Ntuli was sentenced to 20 years for each count.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended the Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit “for a wonderful work they displayed in making sure that the accused is kept in jail for long time.”

Lnaga also thanked all the witnesses “who testified without any fear in this case in assisting the justice to come into the closure of this matter”.
