On Wednesday, 27 October 2021, Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced two former Department of Home Affairs officials for fraud and corruption.

Sanele Ngcobo (33) and Phumlani Ndlovu (46) were processing fraudulent South African identity documents and passports for illegal foreign nationals.

The duo received payments of up to R3000.00 per document. Internal investigation revealed that they were using details of the South African citizens together with the photo of the foreign national.

A case of fraud and corruption was reported at Pietermaritzburg police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation. They were arrested in September 2020 and appeared in court several times until they were found guilty.

They were both sentenced to six years imprisonment of which two years was suspended for five years on condition that they are not found guilty of fraud or corruption during the period of suspension.
