Corrupt Policeman Charged – Verulam

A corrupt policeman who continuously released suspects who were arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa has been charged criminally after Reaction Officers witnessed him receiving monies in exchange for the release of a wanted suspect on Friday last week.

The Warrant Officer was also charged for pointing of a firearm after he confronted the arresting officer at the scene of an accident. The intoxicated off duty policeman who is based at the Verulam SAPS drew a firearm at the scene of an accident on Sunday and pointed it at the arresting officer while verbally abusing him. The drunken policeman then drove into oncoming traffic hurling racist remarks at bystanders.

This confrontation was triggered after a member of Reaction Unit South Africa complained to management at the KZN provincial SAPS Offices that a suspect who was sought by the Police was released after the policeman was paid in an isolated area within the police station. A Reaction Officer witnessed the exchange of money in an isolated area in the police station and reported it.

A case of pointing of firearm and intimidation was registered and the matter had been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the National Police Commissioners Office. The released suspect was re-arrested by Police on Monday morning and detained at the same police station.

On October 21st the suspect was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa on Russom Street in Verulam for house break-in. The suspect was found inside a cupboard during a house break-in in progress. The same suspect is on parole after serving a sentence for murder and attempted murder. He was also wanted on an outstanding case however he was released by the same policeman without being charged.

The same policeman has released several arrested suspects on previous occasions and encouraged criminals to trump up charges against arresting Officers.

This Warrant Officer has been arrested by police on several occasions for domestic violence, discharging of his firearm and attempted murder. This article was carried by a national newspaper after he was arrested and detained at a Durban Police Station. His state issued firearm was taken away at that stage.
