A construction worker has died and four others were injured after scaffolding collapsed at Springfield Park Shopping Centre in Durban earlier today.
According to reports, the workers were installing signage when strong winds caused the scaffolding to collapse, trapping them beneath the structure. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but one worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The shopping centre management prevented journalists from accessing the area, citing private property restrictions. Security personnel reportedly ordered media to leave, limiting further details on the incident.
Police and emergency services remained on-site, with authorities launching an investigation into the cause of the collapse. The deceased worker’s body was still at the scene as officials awaited a mortuary van.
While initial reports suggested a structural collapse, it was later clarified that the incident involved falling scaffolding rather than a building failure. The identities of the workers and the contracting company involved have not yet been disclosed.
