On Wednesday 19 October 2022 Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court sentenced Thokozani Gumede (49) for nine counts of contravening Electronic Communication and Transaction Act and one count of possession of stolen goods.

Gumede was arrested by Hawks members from Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation working together with private security company in April 2019.

Gumede and his accomplices purchased fuel in various service stations using cloned fleet cards. The victims suffered R2 772 000.00 as a result of his unlawful conduct.

During his arrest, he was found in possession of fourteen bank cards of which five were cloned.

He was sentenced to pay a fine of R30 000.00 or twelve months imprisonment for contravening Electronic Communication and Transaction Act.

Gumede was further sentenced to twenty four months imprisonment which is suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of theft, attempted theft or possession of suspected stolen property during the period of suspension.

He will undergo three years correctional supervision and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
