The accused, Qobolwakhe Justice Gumbi (29) will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was handed down a term of life imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional Court.

His name will be recorded in the National Register of Sex Offenders and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm and will never be able to work in an environment involving children.

On 2 December 2013 at 15h00, the accused went to the home of the 14 year old victim in the Nyavini area in Msinsini near Port Shepstone, where he assaulted her with an electrical cord, threatened her with a knife and fired a shot to further intimidate her and raped her.

The investigating officer immediately began working on the case and circulated the suspect. Investigation revealed that he was being held in Durban on charges of armed robbery which occurred in May 2015 in Verulam. However, these charges were later withdrawn. Unfortunately for him, he could not escape the penalties for the crime he committed against an innocent vulnerable child in Msinsini and had to stand trial for his dreadful deeds.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa is pleased with the outcome of this case. “This sentence shows that the detective team have been diligently working on the case,” he said.
