Armed robbers held up a cash in transit van in Botha’s Hill yesterday and fled with an undisclosed sum of cash.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the incident was one of several serious and violent crimes at business premises across the city yesterday.

“G4 cash in transit security guards had just arrived at a business premises in Old Main Road in Botha’s Hill when they were ambushed by rifle-wielding armed robbers. A robber armed with a rifle disarmed and robbed one of the guards of his firearm when he jumped out of the van with two cash boxes. A second suspect grabbed the cash boxes and they fled towards a vehicle parked across the road,” Jackson said. “The robbers fled towards the Kwanyuswa area in a white VW Polo with the registration NU 45566.”

Hillcrest SAPS and the SAPS Organised Crime Unit attended the scene of the crime.

Jackson said a gang of five armed men held up a businessman and his staff in Main Road in Escombe at around 6.60pm last night. “The gang hit one of the staff members over the back of his head with the butt of a firearm and fled with cash, cellphones and laptops,” Jackson said.

Malvern SAPS attended the scene of the crime. No medical assistance was required.

In a third armed robbery in Monty Naicker Road in the CBD, two armed men held up staff at a fast-food outlet. “The gang fled with around R700 cash. No injuries were reported. Police attended the scene,” he said.

Jackson added that shots were fired during a botched hijacking in Goble Road in Morningside at around 6.30pm. “The victim fired two shots and the suspects fled in a red Renault Clio. No injuries were reported,” he said.
