A 31 year old suspect is appearing at the Verulam Magistrates Court for attempted murder, theft of motor vehicle and illegal possession of a firearm as well as ammunition.

On the night of 24 November 2019, police officers from the Verulam police station were conducting operations in the CBD to curb criminal activities when they heard gunshots. They proceeded to Ireland Street when they spotted a man carrying a firearm and they gave chase.

The suspect was apprehended and a firearm with 10 rounds of ammunition was seized. During the arrest, police were approached by two men who claimed that the suspect stole their vehicle which was parked on Russom Street and that he shot at them when he was confronted.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula said, “The alertness of the police officers and swift arrest of the suspect is commended. We are also clamping down on the proliferation of illegal firearms during our Festive Season Operations.”
