Busted shoplifter pulls knife on Umhlatuzana shop manager

Blue Security armed response officers arrested four suspects for trespassing and attempted armed robbery in separate incidents in Chatsworth and Umhlatuzana at the weekend.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a shop manager in Umhlatuzana had pressed a panic alarm when he spotted a shoplifter loading Red Bull energy drinks into his backpack at around 9.10am yesterday. “The store manager confronted the suspect, who turned violent, and pulled out a knife to attack him, but our armed response officer arrived at the scene and managed to restrain and arrest the suspect. All of the goods were recovered from the backpack. No injuries were reported,” Mathios said.

Bayview SAPS attended the scene of the crime and took the suspect into custody. The suspect was charged with a count of attempted armed robbery.

Mathios said armed response officers arrested two suspects in Silverglen Drive after they were spotted trespassing and fence hopping in broad daylight on Sunday at around 10.15am. “Our officers responded to the scene where a resident had heard a noise and spotted one of the suspects on her property. When our officers arrived at the scene they spotted a second suspect sitting outside the property and talking on his cellphone. As they got out of their vehicle they saw the second suspect fence hopping as he attempted to flee the scene,” Mathios said.

“One of our officers arrested the suspect at the gate while the second officer chased down the fence hopper and managed to arrest him. Both suspects were handed over to Bayview SAPS at the scene,” Mathios said.

A fourth suspect was arrested in Florence Nightingale Drive in Chatsworth on Friday afternoon at around 1.45pm. “Our officer responded to the scene where he arrested a 16 year old suspect for trespassing,” Mathios said.

The suspect was handed over to Chatsworth SAPS at the scene of the crime.
